Last summer Edinburgh hosted the first event of its kind called The Gathering, a weekend event that brought people from all over the world to meet with their fellow clansmen/women for a celebration of most of the Scottish clans (a few were too bloody-minded and short sighted to think it worth participating) in one place. The event was a tartan kaleidoscope of musical performances, parades and shopping opportunities. And for those who wanted to add a little pomp and circumstance to their experience, there was a reception at Holyrood House in honour of Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. My partner Gareth was involved in the event so he was invited to the reception and by default, so was I.

So there I was, standing in an ornate reception room, sipping champagne and feeling awkward, when Camilla magically materialised in front of me. “So why are you here?” she asked, blue eyes peering into mine. Startled by her sudden appearance and direct question, I don’t quite remember what I said, but it was something about doing a bit of writing for Panalba, The Gathering's website, and offering emotional support to Gareth. “Well I think that’s very important,” she said, and disappeared again into the crowd.
So why exactly am I here, adding to the already heaving blogosphere that has more than its share of folks writing about all things financial?
As a Jack of All Trades sort of person, i.e., someone who has moved from investing in mutual funds in the US as a hobby for several years, to working as a financial adviser in the UK for a few years, to becoming a trader on my own for the last couple of years along with various other investments, I think people might get a kick out of hearing a bit (the good, bad and ugly) about my experiences. Since I try to avoid taking myself too seriously, my aim in the coming weeks/months/years will simply be to entertain and inform to the best of my knowledge.
On a more selfish note, being a trader means spending loads of time alone staring at computer screens. So writing this blog will give me the opportunity to talk about a subject I love, hopefully to people who are interested as well, as opposed to Gareth and my friends, whose eyes glaze over about five minutes into one of my diatribes about trading/financial planning/investing/random market-related stuff.
So please feel free to chat back – I’ll do my best to respond, unless you’ve decided to be nasty and then call yourself “anonymous.” I personally don’t feel people who don’t have the balls to attach their name to a rant are worthy of a response. And I guess I should reiterate (I put this at the bottom of each page) that my posts are just a sharing of my experiences on my financial journey through life and are not intended, in any way, shape or form, to be taken as financial advice.
